Hexes and Curses - Why I Guess I'm A Dark Witch
Karma has human hands.
This is one of my core beliefs when it comes to practicing my craft. Sometimes she needs a little help from the fleshy ones to move her retribution along.
Don't misunderstand - karma is a neutral force, and so I like to offer my hands in assistance for blessing, as well as curse. I will send out 100 well wishes for every hex I cast (that's totally conjecture; I have never actually counted), but when it's called for, I will call upon what's needed in order to "return the ass-kicking".
I am a hexy little minx. 😼
Witches curse for any number of reasons; and many don't curse, at all. Some traditions don't include cursing, and that's fair. Wicca leaves actions to the rule of three, and that's okay, it's for them.
I am not a Wiccan. I don't belong to any one particular tradition. I like to borrow from all over, which means that I am as likely to call on Hecate as I am to invoke Baron Samedi or Santa Muerte when it comes to send someone a return on investment.
Am I evil? Some may say so, I say let them.
But since witchcraft is essentially a directing of energy with a strong intention behind it, I think I'm no more evil than anyone else.
I have chosen to embrace the "dark" in me - we all have it - and harness it.
Carl Jung wrote at length about this, and it is a very critical step in learning as much about ourselves as we can. Believing that we are all light and no dark is denial, and very detrimental, as far as I believe.
But back to why I hex.
Shit happens all the time. People are inherently corrupt jerks, who will step on, over, and stab you to accomplish their means. It's our nature.
Even the purest soul you know would end a life if they believed that it would continue theirs.
So, when someone sticks a thorn in us, we make a choice:
1) let it go
2) allow ourselves to be victims
3) return the favour
Sometimes, we choose all three in different measures, sometimes all at once.
My preference lies with option 1, when I can help it. Why burn energy on something that bothers me? I let most things go.
But once in a while, someone does something stupid because they don't know who they're dealing with.
Cross this witch bad, and get burned.
This is more than annoying me or pissing me off. That's no big deal.
But you fuck with my life, or my family, or jeopardize my sense of safety, and you're marked.
My favourite curse? Banishing.
With fire.
All you basically need is a candle and the person's name. Got a photo? Even better. Black salt?
Call it signed, sealed, and delivered.
Cursing has benefits.
For a start, it empowers you. How often are we left feeling helpless and without hope after something has happened? Pretty frequently. We can't strike back openly, in many circumstances.
Cast a spell, and you feel like you have some control over events - even a little. Psychologically, this can be the difference between being the victim, and taking responsibility for healing yourself.
It works, believe me.
You can send an anonymous bag of candy dicks to your target too - just for a little karmic bump.
It is FAR too easy to look up addresses in Sweden.
Then there's the satisfaction of knowing that you might be a little "bad" by some standards, but if it's deserved, you feel powerful. It's like having that delicious secret that keeps you smiling to yourself. Add a divination tool - like tarot - and you can watch as your little gift unfolds. I like to check in with my cards on occasion, to see if my target has learned to turn themselves around, yet.
Because, when I cast a hex, the recipient has the personal responsibility to correct their behaviour in order to end the spell. If they keep engaging in the behaviour that got them cursed, they remain cursed. No counter spell is needed; just stop being an asshole. It's my little silver lining around the black cloud.
Don't throw people under the bus.
Don't sleep with someone that you fully know is in a committed relationship.
Don't steal from others.
Don't fuck with someone's family just because you don't like them.
Pretty easy, right?
Well, since most people think they're living the best way they can be, they find themselves faultless. The ones who are always crying, "Why do things keep happening to me?"
"Why do I always get screwed?"
"Everyone's always after me."
Those ones outsource the reasons for the state of their situations, and it's bullshit. They never bother to look at the one variable that remains constant across every circumstance. Themselves.
I'm not saying that shitty things happen to people because they're the shitty reason, but it's not hard to see that some people just constantly have shit going on.
The drama llamas. If there's nothing to cry about; if nobody is demonizing them, then they'll have have nothing to talk about.
It's hard work to turn that thinking around, but it's possible. Mindfulness, gratitude, and keeping our own behaviour in check becomes pretty routine after a while, and life is pretty sweet when it's quieter.
Now, if you've read this far - thank you - I'll give you some advice.
If you've been crossed or hurt, and you're mad as hell, you might want to entertain sending a little kick someone's way. Good for you!
But take a few moments to consider a few things.
*Don't do anything illegal. No property damage, no direct personal harm etc. You want to send a curse, not land in jail. How are you supposed to enjoy the fruits of your labour if you're incarcerated?
*Witchcraft is about balance, so evaluate the damage done before choosing a hex to cast. You don't want to send out something so powerful that it offsets what's been done to you. Extra energy scatters, and you can actually reabsorb that shit and have some really crappy days. One of the best curses I've seen is a direct repayment of action; "may the horrors of your actions be revealed to you."
*Are you comfortable casting a curse? Many of us have grown up in religious traditions where this is considered "evil" (cough, bullshit, cough), and you may have underlying discomfort around this kind of thing. If being reassured that hell and Satan aren't actually real isn't enough to settle your fears, hexes are not for you. Even Satanism doesn't believe in Satan as a real entity - I'll discuss why Satanism might be most humanitarian path in another post - but we sure are indoctrinated with a lot of Christian nonsense in society.
*Know that if you are contracting a "hex for hire" service - ie. hiring a witch to send your curse, it's still your intent and your drive behind it. The witch is simply the conduit.
I like giving people the power to send their own hexes. Just add water, kinda.
I'll happily supply you with the supplies and the words...and badabing! You cast a hex with your own hands, and you have the satisfaction of knowing that you have taken control of your anguish.
Thanks for reading this novel of a post! I hope it has been at least entertaining, and at best, given something to think about.
Hail yourselves!
