"If Covid Had Never Happened"

Image
I saw this hashtag "trending" on Twitter earlier today. I wasn't surprised to see that the majority of tweets corresponding to this hashtag were lamenting. All the things they would have done, had the world not been "forced" into isolation, in order to protect itself. The world will always have its fools. This did get me thinking though, about the idea of what might be, had Covid-19 not shown up to the party. A few things that struck me immediately involved moments that affected people I knew personally:     - my husband's brother-in-law would likely still be alive, as he passed from covid.     - my friend would have experienced her own father's passing with much more closure.     - another friend would not still  be ill with lingering covid effects, months after initial onset.     - it's highly possible that we would not have borne witness to just how ridiculous, selfish, and stupid so              man...

A Whole Plague Of Our Own

It's been a lifetime since March, hasn't it?  Every time I step out of my house, I am shocked that it's +30 and lush green outside.  I keep expecting it to be cold and snowy. It's not, though.  it's half-June; nearly midsummer.  The weather is gorgeous, and I suppose I'm happy that we spent most of the crappy muddy and inconsistently cold Winnipeg spring indoors. Days have blended together; timelines mean very little, anymore.  Sunday only means that it's the day before another work conference call.  My workdays start around 7:30 am, and titter through until about 9 pm.  I won't complain about working from home - I've been productive, and I thrive with the flexibility.  I recognize that not everyone has had the same experience I haven't had the worst time homeschooling, though my son and I have experienced the stress of forgetting what day it is, and rushing to make sure assignments are due on time.  We are both very proud to say that as of t...

No Justice, No Peace

Emmett Till was a 14 year old African American boy who was lynched in 1955 in Mississippi. He was accused of making inappropriate advances towards a married white woman. He was found in the Tallahatchie River, three days after being beaten, mutilated, and shot in the head by the woman's husband and brother-in-law.  They were never convicted for their acts, even after admitting to killing Emmett - years later - thanks to double jeopardy. Many, many years later (2008), the woman admitted that she had fabricated parts of her allegations. No justice for a 14 year old boy, who spoke to a white woman in segregated America. Emmett Till.  Say his name. A couple of days ago, I shared a post on Facebook, pointing out how white privilege is very real, by showing a *not-comprehensive) list of names of POC after the preceding activities that directly impacted their unjust treatment, and deaths.  Freddie Gray was a 25 year old man in Baltimore in 2015, who was arrested for alleged poss...
