Your Body Is Not A Trash Can & Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches Are A Health Food

Image
My dear friend, "American Liz" (so named because she lives in the US, and I like to use description nicknames for my duplicately-named friends) brought a post to my attention a while back, that made both our skins crawl. It was a post from a macro tracking group on Facebook, where a woman was celebrating throwing out a pb&j sandwich that her daughter had refused to eat. Her pride came from the fact that, instead of treating her body like a trash can and eating the sandwich, she tossed it in the actual trash, instead. This way, she still had room in her macros for the ice cream she had planned for later that evening. Liz, who is fierce and amazing, and one of my total heroes, is a climate change advocate (and kick ass personal trainer). She was furious that someone would throw food out, rather than save it, and present it to her daughter at a later time. Food waste ought to be absolutely not a thing. From a historical perspective, we have never lived in a...

What "I've Tried Everything" Really Means.

Image
It means you haven't. Because if nothing has worked, there's something that either wasn't done, wasn't done correctly, or you genuinely didn't know about doing it to begin with. In addition to this, trying isn't doing. "I've tried everything" often means that many things were attempted, approximated, started... And were not completed. There are so many reasons that so many people don't progress on nutrition and/or exercise programs. Sometimes it can be the programming, sure. A quick scroll through Instagram fitspo, and you're faced with countless accounts showing movements of  Cirque du Soleil complexity . Banded cable suspension shit. Burpees on a weight bench. Deadlifts on a bosu ball. I've seen all of these...in person. It's entertaining, and it's also why ER's were invented. More often than not, though, it's a perfectly reasonable training program, and some seriously easy to follow nutritional g...

Persephone's Journey Is So Much Better Than Insta Fitspo

The Autumnal Equinox is magical. I'll fight anyone who doesn't agree. The trees that glow with their colour change. The crispness in the air. The beautiful skies that, even when overcast gray , are soft. On a more mundane level, we pull out our fall clothing; sleeves, sweaters, pants, ankle boots.  I am thrilled to wear my Docs, again. The shops all bring out their Hallowe'en decorations, and some of us use the availability to add to our home decor. I have always loved this time of year. For me, there's a calm that comes with the change in season. The animals prepare themselves for the coming winter, and things just feel quieter. Every year brings its experiences and lessons, and I always find reconnection with myself in the fall. I become more introspective, and I definitely keep more to myself. This year, fall feels different. I'm different. 2019 has been a year of growth for me. Of healing. Of discovery. How cliché, huh? I genuinely beli...

Why Mr. Rogers Is My #GoalWeight Motivation

Image
Goal weight. This concept has been a colossal mind fuck for me, pretty much always. Despite every formula out there for calculating an individual's "goal weight", none of them are really accurate, because there's just far too much at play. Height, weight, body composition, activity level, type of activity, age, sex, etc. It turns out, that this magical number is best treated as an arbitrary point to base caloric deficit calculations on. **Shout-out to Jordan Syatt of Syatt Fitness!  Check him out on YouTube , he has the best information on all things diet and training, inclusive how to use your goal weight to calculate your calories and macros for fat loss.*** https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZk-b1KyEL9rovh7zdfw_lg Back to my ramble, here... My goal weight has been many different numbers. At times it has been a shape or state of conditioning. Late 2018 shook me up and thrust a number in my face that I was determined to hit. Come hell or high wat...
